Women Forge New Pathways to Stop Domestic Violence Against Men

November 21, 2024 – The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men is being observed on November 21 to raise public awareness about the epidemic of domestic violence and abuse against men (1). Around the world, women are playing a lead role in stopping female-on-male abuse – following is a partial listing:

Argentina: The Women’s Front of Argentina Against False Allegations (2) has been at the forefront of the national movement to publicize the problem of false allegations. Victoria Villarruel, Vice President of Argentina, recently noted that false allegations against men are made “without consequences for lying, breaking the principle of equality before the law.” (3)

Australia: The Men’s Rights Agency, headed by Sue Price, reveals, “Fairness and equal treatment for both genders, the original aim of the women’s movement has been lost as society is encouraged to view men as perpetrators of evil and women as only victims.” (4)

Denmark: Marie Bjerre, Danish Minister for Equality, spearheaded the government’s move to assure equal support to male victims of domestic violence, explaining, “Equality is for both women and men.” (5)

England: Lyn Crabtree of International Falsely Accused Day has led the global effort to stop false allegations of abuse against men (6). For International Men’s Day on November 19, she organized a Zoom conference to explore the problems facing men and boys.

India: The All Bengal Men’s Forum, headed by Nandini Bhattacharjee, sponsors a broad range of programs designed to support men. The Forum reports, “The frequency of domestic violence against men has increased in recent years, and that many cases go unreported as men feel too ashamed to report abuse, or fear false accusations against them in reprisal.” (7)

Nigeria: The Life After Abuse Foundation is a women-led, non-profit organization established to provide comprehensive education, mentorship, and psychosocial support to boys and men who have experienced trauma and abuse (8). The group is working to establish a Commission for Men in that country.

Northern Ireland: On November 9, a group of women marched through Belfast to advocate for increased support for male victims of domestic abuse. One of the women explained, “Many men who suffer feel they can’t speak out for fear of being branded as angry, shouters, or disruptive.” (9)

South Africa: Odette van Rensburg of Dogs on the Run produced a 14-minute documentary video titled, “MEN TOO – Domestic Violence Against Men.” (10) To date, the video has enjoyed 2.7 thousand views.

Spain: ANAVID, headed by Maria Legaz, organized a demonstration in Madrid on November 16 on behalf of all victims of domestic violence. Attended by 300 persons, the demonstration highlighted the “civil murder of innocent men.” (11)

Domestic violence against men is just as widespread as domestic violence against women (12).  The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance invites all United Nations agencies and member nations to participate in International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 172 member organizations from 38 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and gender-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/coalitions/davia/
