International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men
The 2023 observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men was held on November 17. The event was highlighted by release of the “MEN TOO – Domestic Violence Against Men” documentary — see images, above. Equal Rights for All Victims
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights upholds the principle of equal rights for men and women: “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex,….” The goal of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men is to raise awareness of the public and policymakers about the epidemic of overall violence, domestic violence, and domestic abuse against men.
Following are key facts:
- Violence-related deaths: Globally, nearly twice as many males as females are killed by injuries and violence each year.
- Homicide deaths: In 178 out of 183 countries, men have higher rates of homicide deaths than women.
- Child homicides: Among children 0-19 years old, boys account for 70% of all homicide victims.
- Suicide: The global suicide rate is more than twice as high in males (12.6 per 100,000), compared to females (5.4 per 100,000).
- Domestic violence: Around the world, men and women are equally likely to be victims of intimate partner violence.
- Cyber harassment: In the United States, 43% of men and 38% of women say they have been harassed online.

2022 Observance
The 2022 observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men highlighted the plight of Johnny Depp, who was physically and psychologically abused by Amber Heard. IDEVAM events were held in Argentina, Australia, India, Ireland, Lithuania, Northern Ireland, Peru, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States. The observance featured an international press conference, editorials, videos, press releases, Twitter campaigns, and more.
