Brutal Murder of Christian Obumseli Reveals Urgent Need to Address Epidemic of Domestic Violence Against Men

WASHINGTON / November 7, 2022 – Christian Obumseli was recently murdered in a Miami apartment by his girlfriend, Courtney Clenney. After taunting the man with a racial slur, she then plunged a knife into the man’s chest. Clenney now faces second-degree murder charges (1).  The former Onlyfans star once boasted 2 million Instagram followers.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (DAVIA) is warning governments around the world about the hidden epidemic of domestic violence against men. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control reports that “About 1 in 3 men experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.” (2)

The situation appears to be worse in Australia, where a recent survey reveals that 38% of adolescent females reported they had perpetrated both physical/sexual violence and non-physical forms of abuse against family members, compared to 29% of adolescent males (3).

In the United Kingdom, 42 groups came together last week in support of “Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day.” These groups included law enforcement agencies, political entities, and social services groups like the Male Survivors Partnership, National Center for Domestic Violence, Survivors of Domestic Abuse, and many others (4).

Domestic violence against men represents a hidden epidemic around the world. A compilation of 343 scholarly investigations conducted in 40 countries concluded that “women are as physically aggressive as men (or more) in their relationships with their spouses or opposite-sex partners.” (5) These studies were confirmed during the recent trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that revealed Heard was physically and psychologically abusive of Depp (6).

Male victims of domestic violence are often ignored, ridiculed, or even falsely arrested (7).  The 55 member organizations of the Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (8) call on governments around the world to address the long-neglected problem. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men will be observed on November 18.  (9)
