Young Liberal Women Embrace Extremist Ideologies, But Face Strong Opposition
June 29, 2026 — In a striking display of shifting political allegiances, New York’s Democratic primaries on June 23 delivered strong victories for democratic socialist candidates, including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier (1).
Chevalier’s extreme views are highlighted by her leadership at Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), a group whose mission statement openly declares: “We are Westerners fighting for the total eradication of Western civilization.” She also helped launch the anti-Israel campaign “Columbia University Apartheid Divest.” (2)
The New York election results align with polling that reveals a pronounced gender gap among American youth. One recent poll found that 58% of women ages 18–34 identify as progressive or liberal, compared to only 37% of men in the same age group (3).
Around the world, young women are embracing radical socialist ideologies:
- Australia: A YouGov poll showed 53% of 18–24-year-olds believe the country should become more socialist, while only 22% want it to become more capitalist (4).
- Canada: A Fraser Institute/Leger poll found 46% of Canadians aged 18–34 preferred socialism as the ideal economic system, compared to 39% for capitalism (5).
- Germany: In recent elections, about 60% of young women (ages 18–24) supported left parties such as Die Linke, SPD, or the Greens, while 25–27% of young men backed the right-leaning AfD. (6)
- United Kingdom: The Fraser Institute poll found 53% of 18–34-year-olds viewed socialism as the ideal economic system. Young women are more likely than young men to identify as left-wing and support Green or Labour policies (7).
Similar patterns have been noted across other Western European countries (8).
But ironically, conservative parties that reject socialist policies have registered strong advances, becoming the largest or second-largest political forces in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Conservative parties in Finland, Netherlands, Portugal, and Sweden also have registered gains in recent elections.
In the Western Hemisphere, a conservative wave is gathering momentum in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, and the United States. In Peru, conservative Keiko Fujimori just secured an unbeatable lead in the presidential election (9).
Back in the United States, mainstream Democratic figures are criticizing the recent New York election results. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries commented, “We have agreed to strongly disagree.” Former DNC Chair Jamie Harrison advised the radical figures, “please don’t run for our nomination.” And fabled liberal comedian Bill Maher vowed that his “vote is in play” after the recent socialist victories (10).
Last but not least, conservative male voters increasingly are viewed as the new “power demographic.” (11)
For decades, young women have been inundated with a feminist “equality” ideology that frames fairness in terms of identical outcomes — a vision rooted in Karl Marx’s notion of a Communist utopia.
And now, that fairyland vision is about to encounter a reality check.
