Women Invited to Speak Out in Support of Male Victims of Violence
October 11, 2023 – Marie Bjerre, Equality Minister of Denmark, announced last week the decision to assure male victims of domestic violence are able to seek assistance at a crisis center on the same basis as female victims (1). Bjerre’s announcement highlights the growing global support among women to assure that men are able to enjoy the fruits of gender equality.
In the United Kingdom, women are among the strongest proponents of efforts to establish a Minister for Men:
- MP Katherine Fletcher was one of the first persons to call for a Minister for Men (2).
- Columnist Rachel Moore referred to the Minister for Men proposal as “a great idea.” (3)
In Norway, Camilla Stoltenberg, member of the Men’s Equality Commission, is a strong proponent of addressing the gender achievement gap in schools (4).
In the United States:
- Numerous women have endorsed the creation of a White House Council on Boys and Men (5).
- Fredericka Wilson was the champion of a bill to establish a Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (6).
In Canada, columnist Janice Fiamengo is a fierce critic of government policies that create a double-standard for men and women (7).
In Australia, Bettina Arndt is a tireless advocate of fairness for men (8), and Sue Price heads up the Men’s Rights Agency (9).
In India, Nandini Bhattacharjee leads the All Bengal Men’s Forum (10).
Globally, nearly twice as many males as females are killed by injuries and violence each year, according to the World Health Organization (11). Specifically:
- In 177 out of 183 countries, men are more likely than women to be victims of homicide (12).
- Among children 0-19 years old, boys account for 70% of all homicide victims (13).
- Globally, men are equally likely as women to be victims of domestic violence (14).
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men will be observed on November 17. DAVIA invites female lawmakers and other women to support the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Men, to speak out to end violence against men and boys around the world (15).
The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 110 member organizations from 34 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and gender-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/coalitions/davia/
