United Nations’ Violence Proposal Criticized as a ‘Modern-Day Exercise in Orwellian Disinformation’

WASHINGTON / October 17, 2022 – A recent analysis of a proposal to the United Nations criticizes the document as a “a modern-day exercise in Orwellian disinformation.” The analysis concludes that the UN delegates “cannot take such a one-sided, poorly referenced, and intellectually dishonest document seriously.” (1)

The analysis reviews all statements and claims found in proposed UN Resolution A/77/302, titled “Intensification of Efforts to Eliminate All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls.” (2) The analysis was conducted by the Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (DAVIA), an NGO working for domestic violence programs that are inclusive and science-based (3).

The UN proposal ignores the problem of domestic violence against men, and claims the existence of a “surge in violence against women and girls in digital contexts.” (page 3)

But research reveals that domestic violence against men represents a hidden epidemic around the world. A compilation of 343 scholarly investigations conducted in 40 countries concluded that “women are as physically aggressive as men (or more) in their relationships with their spouses or opposite-sex partners.” (4)

Regarding digital abuse, the DAVIA analysis identifies six reports that cast doubt on the veracity of the resolution’s claims. For example, two studies found the digital abuse of men is actually more widespread than online abuse of women:

  1. The Pew Research Center reported that 43% of men, compared to 38% of women, have experienced online harassment (5).
  2. A study published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence found that males were substantially more likely to have experienced digital dating abuse (32.3%) compared to females (23.6%). (6)

The recent trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard revealed that Heard was repeatedly abusive of Depp, both physically and psychologically. On one occasion, Heard hurled a glass at Depp, severing the end of his finger (7).

In recent weeks, international leaders have sharply criticized the United Nations for advancing divisive gender agendas. These leaders include Alejandro Giammattei, President of Guatemala, Pietro Cardinal Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, and Katalin Novák, President of Hungary (8).

DAVIA notes the widespread neglect of domestic violence against men represents a profound human rights violation that the United Nations General Assembly needs to address.
