Feminism in Retreat: International Survey Shows Most Are Disillusioned with Gender ‘Equality’ Efforts
March 29, 2023 – A recent 32-country survey conducted by Ipsos found a majority of world citizens – 54% — believe that “when it comes to giving women equal rights to men, things have gone far enough in their country.” These views are especially strong among persons under 40 years of age (1), as well as in countries such as China (79%), India (74%), Spain (72%), Mexico (63%), Chile (61%), Argentina (61%), Peru (58%), and the Netherlands (54%).
Many persons in these countries also agreed with the statement that “We have gone so far to promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men.”
In response, Ipsos CEO Hamish Munro emphasized that gender equity “should apply for both the genders, as men are perceived to be getting a short shrift with no focus on them. Inclusion for both genders is important.” (2)
A previous Ipsos survey found the percentage of persons around the world who describe themselves as “feminist” had declined to 33% by 2019. (3)
Commenting on these findings, historian David Starkey noted that men “find themselves mocked, perpetually accused of rape, of sexual license, of violence…So perhaps, they could think things have gone a bit too far.” (4)
Boys and men are lagging behind females in many areas, such as education, healthcare, and fair treatment by the legal system (5). In many countries, domestic violence programs fail to recognize the fact that half of all victims of partner violence are male (6). Such biases foster widespread human rights violations of men.
The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance calls on lawmakers, government agencies, and civil society groups to re-focus their gender equality efforts to place equal attention on addressing the needs of men.
The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 76 member organizations from 31 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and sex-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/coalitions/davia/
