Deplorable: UN Human Rights Committee Debates Proposal to Vitiate the Human Rights of Men
WASHINGTON / November 9, 2022 – The United Nations Committee on Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Issues is considering a proposal on “Intensification of Efforts to Prevent and Eliminate All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls: Gender Stereotypes and Negative Social Norms.” (1) Unfortunately, the claims of the A/C.3/77/L.21 document are so flawed, and its effects on the human rights of men so grave, that the Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (2) is urging UN member-nations to speak out in strong opposition to the proposal.
Research confirms that around the world, women are equally likely as men to engage in domestic violence (3). These studies were confirmed during the trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that revealed Heard was physically and psychologically abusive of Depp. In one incident, Heard hurled a glass at Depp, severing the end of his finger (4).
But the UN document repeatedly refers to domestic violence victims with the sex-limited term, “women and girls.” The proposal never mentions “men and boys” as victims of abuse.
This false characterization fosters harmful stereotypes that serve to:
- Deter male victims from getting help (5),
- Result in false arrests of male victims (6), and
- Marginalize fathers from their children (7).
In turn, broader negative stereotypes are applied to men, which multiply the human rights violations. These human rights violations are especially pronounced for men who are members of minority groups (8).
Apparently unaware of the proposal’s discriminatory effects on men, the document ironically states that “discrimination on the basis of sex” is contrary to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international treaties.
Unfortunately, the United Nations has been a party to previous campaigns that violate men’s human rights. According to the non-profit group Split the Difference, United Nations “member countries have incorporated the UN’s directives into acts of law and strategies.” As a result, “Men and boys are dying because of world-wide discrimination from UN directives.” (9)
The Third Committee’s A/C.3/77/L.21 document is an ideological tour de force that represents a deplorable violation of the human rights of men.
