Abused Lesbian Women, Re-Victimized by Feminist Ideology

August 21, 2023 – Feminist ideology holds that domestic violence is motivated by men’s patriarchal need for power and control (1). This view precludes recognition of tragedies such as this:

Yvonne Wu was a lesbian member of the New York Police Department. When Wu discovered her former girlfriend cavorting with her new romantic attachment, Wu opened fire, killing the new girlfriend. Wu was arrested and charged with murder (2).

Around the world, domestic abuse has been documented to be a major problem in lesbian relationships:

  • Australia: A national survey of over 5,400 LGBTIQ persons found 41% of female respondents (compared to 28% of males) reported having been in a relationship in which the partner was abusive (3).
  • Canada: A meta-analysis of studies found 18% of lesbians had been victims of physical violence and 43% had been victims of psychological or emotional violence (4).
  • Italy: 53% of lesbians revealed that quarrels with their female partner had been “substantial,” and 19.5% said their female partner had demanded sex against their will (5).
  • United Kingdom: 40% of women reported they had ever experienced domestic abuse by a female partner (6).
  • United States: 44% of lesbian women, compared to 26% of gay men, reported lifetime victimization rates for domestic violence, rape, and/or stalking (7).

Science shows that domestic violence is caused by alcohol abuse (8), mental health problems (9), and relationship breakdown (10) – not “patriarchy.” But ideologues care little about the science.

As a result, female-on-female violence remains invisible. Shelters are unprepared, police are less responsive to pleas for help, and counseling programs fail to recognize the unique challenges faced by women in abusive same-sex relationships (11). These women are victimized twice, first by their partner and then by an uncaring and unresponsive system.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance calls on the United Nations and on Member Nations to assure that all forms of domestic violence, regardless of the sex of the perpetrator, are recognized and addressed.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 106 member organizations from 34 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and gender-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/coalitions/davia/
