High Court Ruling Spotlights Growing Role of Women in Global Campaign to Help Male Victims
January 29, 2025 –Justice Swarana Kanta of the Delhi High Court issued a historic ruling this past Wednesday after a woman poured boiling water on her husband’s face and chest. Ruling in favor of the male victim, she explained, “Men who face violence at the hands of their wives encounter unique hurdles, including societal disbelief and stigma.”
Justice Kanta called for an end to harmful gender stereotypes, as well: “Stereotypes perpetuating the belief that men cannot be victims of domestic violence must be dismantled. Courts must adopt a gender-neutral approach to ensure fairness.” (1)
Justice Kanta’s decision enjoyed extensive media coverage, and highlights the growing global trend of women working to help male victims of domestic abuse.
Argentina: The Women’s Front of Argentina Against False Allegations (2), led by Andrea Guacci, spearheaded a national awareness campaign against false allegations, resulting in the Senate issuing an Opinion on November 26 to punish persons who make false allegations of abuse (3).
Australia:
- The Men’s Rights Agency, headed by Sue Price, charges that “the perversion of legislation to provide advantages to one gender over the other, contrary to human rights considerations, is creating a two tier society.” (4)
- Bettina Arndt recently announced an ambitious plan to create an “Arndt Army” to advocate on behalf of men targeted by a “shockingly biased system.” (5)
Canada: Susan Chuang, who directs the International Families Alliance, has organized annual conferences on Men and Families. The next conference will be held in Barbados, September 19-20, 2025. (6)
Denmark: Marie Bjerre, Danish Minister for Equality, spearheaded the government’s move to assure equal support to male victims of domestic violence, explaining, “Equality is for both women and men.” (7)
England: Lyn Crabtree reports that 19 countries participated in the 2024 International Falsely Accused Day, observed every year on September 9. (8)
India:
- The All Bengal Men’s Forum, headed by Nandini Bhattacharjee, engages in wide range of advocacy efforts to publicize the necessity of equal and fair treatment for male victims of domestic abuse (9).
- The Ekam Nyaay Foundation, headed by equal rights activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, is addressing the range of pressing issues faced by men in society (10).
Nigeria: The Life After Abuse Foundation is a women-led, non-profit organization working to establish a national Ministry of Men’s Affairs (11).
Northern Ireland: On November 9, a group of women marched through Belfast to advocate for increased support for male victims of domestic abuse (12).
South Africa: Odette van Rensburg of Dogs on the Run updated her documentary video on “MEN TOO – Domestic Violence Against Men.” (13)
Spain:
- On September 24, Madrid City Hall Councilor Carla Toscano revealed how “Feminism has normalized hatred, the violation of rights, and institutional abuse against men. And this must be denounced. For all good men.” (14)
- ANAVID, headed by Maria Legaz, documented the fact that in 2024, mothers were twice as likely as fathers to be the perpetrators of child homicides (15).
United States: Dawn Wolfson leads the efforts of the Advocates for the Falsely Accused, which held an event for International Falsely Accused Day in Sacramento, California (16).
