UN High Commissioner Volker Türk Succumbs to Feminist Zealotry and Bias

July 31, 2023 – History is replete with movements that evolved from idealism to fanaticism, and worse (1). Such is the case with Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (2).

On June 23, Türk released an impassioned manifesto denouncing what he called the “gender equality backlash” (3). By definition, “equality” applies to all persons, both male and female. So how are men around the world faring, compared to women?

The Basic Index of Gender Inequality (BIGI) measures the ratio of women to men on three dimensions: Educational Opportunities in Childhood, Healthy Life Expectancy, and Overall Life Satisfaction. BIGI data shows that in 91 of 134 countries evaluated, men are lagging behind women (4).

Domestic violence is another area of concern. Even though men are just as likely as women to be victims of partner aggression (5), male victims face severe discrimination in seeking police assistance (6) and social services (7).

Experience reveals that gender ideologues rely on tactics such as repeating key phrases in mind-numbing manner, denigrating their opponents, and invoking conspiracy theories. Volker Türk’s June 23 message exemplifies each of these Orwellian methods:

Türk evokes the ill-defined phrase, “gender equality,” seven times in his message. But not once does he mention anything about “men’s rights.” Apparently, Türk’s conception of “equality” excludes half of the world’s population.
Türk denigrates his opponents’ arguments as being “cloaked in narratives that reward toxic masculinity and normalize misogyny, and are thinly veiled in an emphasis on traditional ‘values.’” Yes, he really said that.
Türk claims “our guiding principle” must be to “dismantle the patriarchy.” Around the world, women now have the right to vote and run for political office. Which means the “patriarchy” has become a relic of the historical past.

Instead, commentator Carrie Gress has argued that the real problem in modern-day societies is matriarchy, which she says has created a “closed system that ignores, maligns, or suppresses any competing data, bullying or railroading any opposition.” (8)

Ignoring, maligning, and suppressing different perspectives….a perfect summary of Volker Türk’s indecorous and unseemly gender manifesto.
