Nikki Haley Plays the Gender Card, Disrespects Men and Fathers

August 25, 2023 – During Wednesday’s presidential debate, several candidates spoke about men and fathers in a positive and sympathetic manner. Vivek Ramaswamy emphasized the importance of the nuclear family that consists of a father, mother, and children. And Sen. Tim Scott highlighted how liberal policies have driven Black men out of their homes so wives could collect larger welfare checks.

But Republican candidate Nikki Haley took a different tack, claiming, “If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman.” Haley’s comment was not made in jest.

To assess the validity of Haley’s remark, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes detailed information on the sex composition of hundreds of occupations (1). A quick perusal reveals that men tend to dominate in jobs that require high levels of physical activity:

  • Firefighters: 93.8%
  • Brickmasons: 97.0%
  • Electricians: 97.8%

In contrast, women gravitate to occupations that involve high levels of social interaction:

  • Human resources managers: 72.9%
  • Elementary and middle school teachers: 79.7%
  • Social workers: 81.5%

In other words, men tend to enter into occupations that are focused on “doing,” while women prefer jobs that are mostly about talking and interacting. So Nikki Haley’s derogatory claim is the exact opposite of the truth.

White males are one of the largest electorates in the nation. In the 2020 elections, the White male electorate spelled the difference in swaying the outcome (2). In 2024 White men may prove, once again, to be the kingmakers.

Nikki Haley’s thoughtless remark calls into question her temperament and judgement. It also underscores the pervasive societal indifference to the needs of men, such as the widespread sex discrimination of male victims of domestic violence (3).

Above all, the Haley quip confirms the Chinese proverb, “The tongue is the sword of a woman, and she never lets it become rusty.”
