Media Complicity in the Feminist Domestic Abuse Crusade
September 3, 2024 – Hurricane Ernesto reached the shores of Bermuda on August 17, forcing the closure of beaches and leaving homes without power. In the wake of the relatively mild Category I storm, no deaths were reported. But feminists have created a dubious narrative that insists domestic violence skyrockets during disasters – a narrative that lacks scientific support (1).
So predictably the Bermuda Royal Gazette published an article last Wednesday titled, “Ernesto Highlights Persistent Issue of Domestic Abuse” (2). The article repeatedly referred to female victims of domestic abuse — but made no mention of male victims.
Ironically the very same day, CNN published an article about Nicole Elizabeth Virzi, charged with the vicious murder of a six-week old boy, Leon, whom she was caring for. CNN reported, “Leon’s CT scan showed a severe skull fracture to the left side of the head, along with multiple brain bleeds. An autopsy determined that they were caused by blunt force trauma and were consistent with child abuse.” (3)
Around the world, female-perpetrated abuse incidents are becoming more numerous and heinous:
- Australia: A woman was charged with domestic violence, arson, and attempted murder after she set a house on fire while a man and two children slept inside (4).
- Ireland: A 46-year-old mother was sentenced to three years in prison for inflicting severe sexual abuse on her young son. The woman showed no remorse during the trial (5).
- Spain: A woman was arrested after assaulting her ex-partner in Pamplona (6).
- United States: Karen Read, accused of killing her boyfriend by driving over his body, is now being sued by the man’s family for wrongful death (7).
Research shows that women are as likely as men to engage in domestic violence (8), and more likely than men to engage in child abuse (9).
But recent analyses have documented severe media bias in its coverage of the domestic violence issue in the United Kingdom (10) and Australia (11). This bias consists of the under-reporting of female-perpetrated violence, and a tendency to generalize from a single case of male-perpetrated violence to cast a stereotype on all men in society.
Journalistic codes of ethics require reporters to assure their articles are accurate, balanced, and fair (12). So it’s time to ask, Why has the media become complicit in the feminist campaign to stereotype and vilify men?
The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 155 member organizations from 37 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and sex-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/davia/
