Lawmakers Increasingly Say ‘No’ to Radical United Nations Proposals

August 7, 2023 – Last month the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee voted to eliminate all voluntary funding to United Nations agencies such as the World Health Organization, UN Population Fund, and UN Women (1). The move reflects a growing resistance by lawmakers around the world to a series of radical concepts and programs being advanced at the United Nations.

Following are examples of these ideas:

Family: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the family as “the natural and fundamental group unit of society” (2). But various UN agencies are working to change that, attempting to insert the phrase, “various forms of the family,” into a number of UN resolutions. This ungainly wording has never been adopted by consensus (3).

Comprehensive Sexuality Education: At the March meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, groups pushed for school programs to provide instruction to young children on sexual activities and abortion rights. In response, a coalition of countries — Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Caribbean, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Arab Gulf countries, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and the Holy See — united to defeat the proposal (4).

Religious Freedom: A proposal to the UN Human Rights Council seeks to create “a new normative space” in which governments are granted the power to impose LGBT values on religious organizations. “There are dark corners where LGBT people are regarded as sinners and second-class citizens who should be scorned and abused,” the report asserts (5).

Feminist Ideology: On June 23, Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a near-hysterical tweet calling on persons to “dismantle #patriarchy & all structures that perpetuate gender inequality.” (6) But many believe that matriarchy represents a greater social concern than patriarchy (7, 8).

Parental Alienation: Hundreds of studies confirm the problem of Parental Alienation, in which one parent seeks to turn the child against the other parent. But UN staffer Reem Alsalem issued a document terming Parental Alienation a “pseudo-science” (9). Over 5,000 persons signed a petition criticizing the Alsalem document for creating a “high risk of consequential harm” for parents and children. In response, ambassadors at the most recent session of the Human Rights Council declined to approve the controversial report (10).

World Health Organization: The WHO released a document that encourages young children as young as four to “explore gender identities.” In response, in May a government spokesperson said: “The UK Government does not recognize this WHO guidance and we don’t agree with its recommendations.” The shadow minister for education Laura Anne Jones described the guidance as “frankly disturbing” (11).

These are just a few of many examples where the United Nations has staked out a radical position on important issues. Unless UN officials promptly mend their ways, they can expect to see continuing reductions in funding and public support.
