Growing Criticisms of Feminist-Driven Domestic Violence Laws in Recent Days

April 3, 2023 – Women’s propensity to engage in partner aggression has been recognized for many years. As early as 1999, the British Home Office reported that identical percentages of men and women – 4.2% — had been victims of domestic violence (1). Subsequent studies conducted across Europe confirmed these findings (2).

But the expansion of the Istanbul Convention and national domestic violence laws has been driven by gender ideology, not science. Not surprisingly, criticisms of such laws have mounted in recent days:

Czech Republic: Traditional Family lamented that the Istanbul Convention “introduces the obligation to re-educate society in accordance with gender and LGBT ideology, introduces discriminatory laws against men, divides society, and breaks up families with intergenerational conflicts.” (3)

England: The False Allegation Support Organization publicized the horrific case of Ryan Kerrison whose ex-wife has been jailed for making false allegations. Ch Supt Christine Wilson explained, “Ryan Kerrison has been through the most excruciating and harrowing ordeal, being accused and depicted as a monster by a woman who had her own devious and malicious agenda to try and ruin his life.” (4)

Poland: An article in Rzeczpospolita highlighted the plight of Jakub de Chyzy, whose former wife kidnapped his children. The article quoted Piotr Solarz, professor in the Academy of Economics and Humanities in Warsaw, who decried how domestic violence laws “violate the principle of equality and the right to the presumption of innocence.” (5)

Spain: The national “Si es Si” (“Yes means Yes”) law has come under fire for its one-sided enforcement. The ANAVID victim-assistance group exposed the hypocrisy of the Popular Party for criticizing the law in the national legislative chambers, but supporting the law before the European Union (6). These concerns were highlighted in a national TV interview by Gustavo Galan (7).

Commentator Janice Fiamengo argues that feminist ideology has placed a blind-fold on women who only view the world through the lens of female self-interest. Fiamengo argues, “the vast majority of feminists [are] unable to think outside a framework in which women’s interests vastly override those of men.” (8)

Lawmakers should reject domestic violence laws that follow the dictates of gender ideology, and instead should embrace the principles of gender equality, due process, and fairness.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 76 member organizations from 31 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and sex-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/davia/
