Feminist Foreign Policy: Making a Mockery of ‘Gender Equality’
September 27, 2023 – The United Nations held a meeting last Wednesday on “Feminist Foreign Policy” (1). Proponents insist that the goal of Feminist Foreign Policy to promote gender equality in a country’s relations with other nations (2).
But at the United Nations, “gender equality” has acquired a very different meaning. The traditional definition of “equality of opportunity” has been replaced with “uniformity of outcome,” regardless of any biological or psychological differences between the sexes.
This new definition is creating serious problems in two ways:
First, it is well known that women prefer to watch male athletic events over female events. “The bigger problem for women’s sports leagues is that fans of both sexes prefer watching men,” explains John Tierney (3). Ignoring this fact, UN Women recently made this claim: “Globally, #WomenInSport struggle with a massive pay gap, fewer opportunities & sponsorships, less airtime, and unequal playing conditions.” (4)
So UN Women turned women’s preference to support male athletics into an attempt to denounce the “massive pay gap” and “unequal playing conditions” of female athletes.
Second, across the globe, men are lagging behind females (5). These are a few of many examples:
- Access to Domestic Violence Services: Even though males and females experience partner aggression at equal rates (6), male victims routinely face discrimination in receiving services (7).
- Occupational Deaths: Around the world, far more men than women die from occupational injuries. In Sweden for example, male workers have death rates that are six times higher than their female counterparts (8).
- Life Expectancy: In every country around the world, men have shorter lifespans than women. In Brazil, for example, men live 6.4 fewer years than women (9).
UN Women is advancing its agenda with a generous budget of $1.2 billion for 2022-2023 (10). But a review of the websites of the World Health Organization, Human Rights Council, and other UN agencies fails to identify a single office, program, or initiative that specifically addresses the needs of men.
The World Health Organization, for example, published a report in April on “Committing to implementation of the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health” (11). But the WHO has no Global Strategy for Men’s Health — even though men’s lifespans are far shorter than women’s.
So “gender equality” turns out to be an Orwellian cliché that artfully obscures the perverse reality of widespread and systematic discrimination against men.
