Are Feminist Activists Moving Us Towards a Police State?

August 26, 2024 – Charlotte Proudman, British attorney and outspoken feminist, recently made this astonishing proposal (1):

“When a complainant alleges rape, domestic abuse, or coercive control, the accused should not be permitted to seek findings that the complainant has ‘lied’ about the allegations. This approach is discouraging complainants from making allegations of abuse, leaving children at risk of irreparable harm.” [emphasis added]

Studies show that compared to men, women are equally likely to commit domestic violence (2), and are far more likely to be perpetrators of child abuse (3).

In the United Kingdom, 5% of men and 2% of women report they have been falsely accused of some form of domestic abuse (4). So Proudman’s radical idea would result in many thousands of innocent men and women being convicted and imprisoned each year.

Across the globe, democratic ideals of due process, presumption of innocence, and equal treatment under the law have come under assault as feminist activists push for “believe the victim” policies. These campaigns often rely on fear-mongering, vilification, and outright prevarication.

These threats are especially worrisome in the United Kingdom, but can be seen in other countries, as well (5).

Recently the UK National Police Chiefs’ Council issued a Statement on Violence Against Women and Girls (6). Repeating the word “threat” 69 times, the piece is clearly designed to frighten women and stampede lawmakers into action.

Sensing that public opinion is beginning to reject their dubious claims, feminists have opened up a new line of attack, claiming that hatred of women – sometimes referred to as “misogyny” – has become rampant among young men.

Last week the BBC ran an article that featured this chilling headline: “Misogyny to be Treated as Extremism by UK Government.” The article goes on to report, “Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, has ordered a review of the UK’s counter-extremism strategy to determine how best to tackle threats posed by harmful ideologies. The analysis will look at hatred of women as one of the ideological trends that the government says is gaining traction.” (7)

Tellingly, the BBC article does not cite a single government survey or scientific report to support its thesis. And it sidesteps the very real possibility that “misandry,” women’s contempt of men, has become more widespread than misogyny (8).

Surveying the current state of affairs, Twitter owner Elon Musk commented, “The UK is turning into a police state.” (9) Another observer asked simply, “Has Great Britain gone mad?” (10)

The solution to such threats to liberty is straight-forward: Cut off the funding to groups that advocate such totalitarian policies. Last December Argentinian president Javier Milei did exactly that – he defunded and disbanded the national Women, Gender, and Diversity Ministry (11).

Explaining his decision, Milei revealed the simple and obvious way to stop domestic violence (12): “The only solution to reduce crime is to be tough on those who commit it. Increasing state bureaucracy is a moral, fiscal, and political scam.”

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 153 member organizations from 37 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
