‘A free society that despises manhood will not remain free:’ Republican Leaders Speak Out in Defense of Men

September 11, 2023 – American men are besieged from multiple directions (1), and are now lagging behind women in many areas (2). In response, Republican lawmakers have begun to speak out to address the challenges that men are facing in the workplace, the family, and at schools.

Earlier this year, Missouri senator (and best-selling author) Josh Hawley published his courageous book, “Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs.” Hawley argues that no republic has ever survived without men of character to defend what is just and true. He warns bluntly, “A free society that despises manhood will not remain free.” (3)

During the August 23 presidential debate, South Carolina senator Tim Scott highlighted how liberal “Great Society” policies have driven Black men out of their homes so wives could collect larger welfare checks (4).

And last week, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida issued a 40-page report about the current woes faced by American men (5). The “State of the Working (And Non-Working) Man” calls for reforms in education, industry, and more to help marginalized men catch up.

In colleges, countless numbers of male students have been falsely accused of Title IX infractions, resulting in their wrongful expulsion (6). In response, 21 U.S. senators — John Barrasso, John Boozman, Mike Braun, Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Tom Cotton, Kevin Cramer, Ted Cruz, Steve Daines, Joni Ernst, Cindy Hyde-Smith, James Inhofe, James Lankford, Cynthia Lummis, Roger Marshall, Marco Rubio, Rick Scott, Tim Scott, Thom Tillis, Tommy Tuberville, and Roger Wicker — issued a strongly worded letter to the U.S. Department of Education charging its proposed Title IX regulation “threatens students’ Constitutional right to due process and the core American value of justice for all.” (7)

Now, numerous individuals and groups are calling for the establishment of state-level commissions on men and boys. In Washington State, House Bill 1270 proposes to do exactly that (8).

The Council on the Status of Men and Boys (9) calls on lawmakers to speak out about the existential challenges facing men and boys in America.
