61% of Missing Persons and 90% of Homicide Victims are Men. Why is the OJP Leaving Missing and Murdered Men Out in the Cold?
ST. PAUL / March 30, 2022 – In Minnesota, 60.6% of missing persons (1), and 90% of murdered persons are men and boys (2). The Minnesota state government currently sponsors two task forces devoted to the problem of missing and murdered persons. But both task forces exclude consideration of missing and murdered men.
The Minnesota Office of Justice Programs has established two task forces, a Task Force for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (3), and a Task Force for Missing and Murdered African American Women (4).
But inexplicably, the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs has not established a task force to address the problem of missing and murdered men (5). This neglect of missing and murdered men is difficult to understand.
Regarding missing and murdered Native Americans, 14 states have adopted the sex-inclusive approach known as “Missing and Murdered Indian Persons:” Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Washington State, and Wyoming (6).
The Coalition to End Domestic Violence urges Minnesota lawmakers to contact Office of Justice Programs Commissioner John Harrington. Call 651-201-7160 and urge him to appoint two new task forces, one for missing and murdered Indian men, and one for missing and murdered Black men.
