Manipulative Women Who Drive Men to Suicide

October 12, 2026 – Each year approximately 500,000 men die by suicide around the world. (1) Financial exploitation through romance scams, relationship breakdown, and domestic conflict are documented risk factors associated with elevated male suicide rates.

SEXUAL MANIPULATION

Romance scams targeting men have become a significant global problem. Interpol has highlighted organized operations, many linked to Southeast Asia, that generate billions of dollars in losses through fake romantic relationships and related investment fraud.

In the United States, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reported the following for 2025 (2):

  • 23,159 complaints of confidence/romance fraud.
  • $929.3 million in reported losses, up 38% from $672 million in 2024.
  • Average loss per complaint: $40,000.

Examples include:

In the UK, Chris Leeds, 43, a single father, died by suicide after sending thousands of pounds to individuals posing as women interested in a relationship. When the expected arrival did not occur, he faced financial ruin and took his own life (3).

A retired teacher and grandfather from the United States died by suicide after losing nearly $100,000 in a celebrity romance scam in which he believed he was in a relationship with a well-known actress (4).

PSYCHOLOGICAL AND LEGAL MANIPULATION

Research consistently shows that separation and divorce are associated with significantly higher suicide risk among men. A 2025 global meta-analysis found divorced men had roughly 2.8 times greater odds of suicide than married men (5).

In India, the Ekam Nyaay Foundation documented 232 suicides of husbands in the first half of 2026 linked to marital disputes, allegations of harassment by wives or in-laws, denial of child access, and related issues. (6)

In Australia, analyses of male suicide have highlighted the significant role of family breakdown, family-court processes, and loss of contact with children as contributing stressors (7).

In Zimbabwe, cases have been reported of men dying by suicide following relationship rejection after substantial financial support provided to partners, such as the case of Tafadzwa Marwise. (8)

Male suicide remains a major public health issue. Relationship problems, romance scams, and domestic conflict contribute to a portion of these deaths.

Media outlets, lawmakers, government authorities, and law enforcement officials need to pay greater attention to the global epidemic of women who drive their husbands, ex-husbands, and boyfriends to suicide.
