Clancy Trial Reveals Global Threat to Equal Justice Under Law
September 21, 2026 – The six-week trial of Lindsay Clancy, who strangled her three young children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan, in her Massachusetts home on January 24, 2023, has captured global attention.
Among the 12 jurors, eight were women known to be “activists.” From the outset, they believed their job was not to weigh the evidence and objectively adjudicate the allegation. Rather, they believed they should declare Clancy to be criminally insane, in order to focus public attention on the need for better services for depressed postpartum women.
But one juror did not agree with the contention that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis. Often referred to as the “holdout juror,” the man voted against the 11 other jurors who opposed a criminal conviction.
On September 4, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial.
Within days, disgruntled jurors began to grant media interviews to complain that the prosecutor failed to achieve a conviction. Juror Kellie Farina criticized the prosecutor for being “without a heart.”
Farina also criticized the still unnamed male holdout as someone who “had the hardest time getting off the fact that Lindsay viciously killed her children.” And juror Paula Devlin berated the man as “very arrogant.” (1)
On September 13, following days of intense public pressure, the identity of the holdout juror leaked out — Michael Desronvil, a Black man, a Catholic, and self-declared Republican.
Desronvil’s personal background came under intense scrutiny. Persons began to criticize him on social media and stalk him at his home. The harassment soon turned to death threats.
According to journalist Sarah Fields, the man’s family “has been inundated with calls, strangers have left notes at their mother’s home, and the unwanted attention has become so intense that some family members are afraid to leave the house.” (2)
In a September 15 interview with Ray Marcal of Fugitive TV, Desronvil revealed that strangers were even knocking on his door, including a “man creeping around his home.” (3)
Desronvil soon began to receive offers of assistance:
- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis offered Desronvil asylum in his state. (4)
- Leading lawyer Edward Paltzik agreed to be his attorney, writing, “I am representing the courageous and heroic long holdout from the Lindsay Clancy trial.” (5)
An online fund-raising campaign, “Stand with the Juror,” was launched. By September 19, the campaign had raised $330,000. (6)
The core principles of the jury system include the opportunity to objectively evaluate the evidence, to vote your conscience, and not be subjected to harassment and threats.
But activists ridicule these principles as embodiments of “patriarchal justice,” claiming they were developed to uphold male privilege and treat male perspectives as the default standard of objectivity. In the words of feminist Catherine MacKinnon, “The state’s formal norms recapitulate the male point of view.” (7)
Around the world, equal treatment under law is a bedrock principle of legal systems. But as the Clancy case reveals, activists are working to subvert this ideal. Defenders of fairness must speak out to respond to this existential threat.
