Female-Only Space Flight Reveals Irrelevance and Folly of ‘Girl-Power’ Movement
April 21, 2025 – Last Monday pop star Katy Perry and five other women boarded a Blue Origin rocket for the first all-female space flight since 1963. The women did not pilot the craft, work its controls, or conduct scientific research. They were simply strapped in for the highly publicized 11 -minute ride.
From start to finish, the flight was touted as One Giant Leap for Womankind (1):
- The flight organizers argued its purpose was to encourage more girls to pursue careers in STEM – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- As the capsule blasted off the launching pad, one of the women screamed: “Oh my goddess!”
- Emerging from the spacecraft 11-minutes later, Katy Perry remarked, “I feel really connected to that strong divine feminine.”
But within hours, the Girl-Power rhetoric became engulfed in a wave of sarcasm and ridicule, most of it dished out by women. Critic Melanie McFarland deadpanned, “few commoners saw Monday’s highly publicized private jaunt to the boundary between Earth and space as some giant leap for all womankind.” (2)
Elle suggested that the Blue Origin flight “will be the first time anybody went to space with their hair and makeup done.” (3)
Wendy’s foods responded to Katy Perry’s involvement in the mission by asking, “Can we send her back?” (4)
Even the New York Times joined the pile-on, with critic Amanda Hess sarcastically noting that “Blue Origin’s all-female flight proves that women are now free to enjoy capitalism’s most extravagant spoils alongside rich men.” (5)
The most pointed criticism centered around the sheer irrelevance of the 11-minute jaunt to real-world problems. Actress Emily Ratajkowski ridiculed the foray as “beyond parody” and asked, “Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space … For what?” (6) Oliva Munn likewise commented, “there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now.” (7)
British commentator Moira Donegan went so far as to opine that the flight foretold the “utter defeat of American feminism” because the trip “leaned on a vision of women’s empowerment that is light on substance and heavy on a childlike, girlish silliness.” (8)
Increasingly, modern-day feminism has revealed itself as unable to distinguish between fact from fantasy, and reality from rhetoric. To this day, UN Women refuses to even acknowledge the growing problem of female-perpetrated abuse (9).
It’s time that the feminist establishment acknowledge that it’s men, not women, who are losing in the battle of the sexes (10). If the dreaded “patriarchy” ever existed, it is now only a footnote in the long distant past.
