Rishi Sunak’s Gender Caste System: Erasing Half of All Victims of Domestic Abuse

LONDON / February 22, 2023 – Last Friday, newspapers were filled with accounts of Shaye Groves of Hampshire, convicted of murdering her boyfriend in a crazed knife attack (1). Three days later, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak released a plan that inexplicably erased the existence of male victims of domestic abuse (2). The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance (DAVIA) is condemning the plan as a cynical affront to the most basic human rights of men and male victims (3).

Numerous research studies reveal similar rates of domestic abuse by men and women across Europe (4). In the United Kingdom:

  • The Home Office reported identical percentages of domestic violence victimization of 4.2% for both men and women (5).
  • A survey of university students found female students were far more likely to be perpetrators of dating violence than male students: 15.6% versus 7.0%. (6)
  • In lesbian relationships, 40.1% of females in the UK revealed they had experienced domestic abuse by a female partner (7).

But Prime Minister Sunak’s plan inexplicably excludes any mention of female perpetrators and male victims.

The Equality Act 2010 expressly forbids discrimination on the basis of sex (8). Despite this prohibition, Sunak stated: “No woman or girl should ever have to feel unsafe in her home or community and I am determined to stamp out these appalling crimes.”

Equally problematic is the plan to “focus on stopping domestic abuse before it takes place.” This suggests the police may engage in totalitarian efforts to “profile” certain persons who have never committed a crime. The plan even puts violence against women on a par with “terrorism,” flatly ignoring the abuse of men.

By using words such as “frightening existence of torment, pain, fear, and anxiety,” the plan seeks to escalate fear among women. This will harm overall relationships between men and women, serving to weaken the family unit (9).

Irrational, totalitarian, and deplorable. George Orwell’s dystopian prediction that “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others,” may soon come to pass.

The Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance – DAVIA — consists of 73 member organizations from 28 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. DAVIA seeks to ensure that domestic violence and abuse polices are science-based, family-affirming, and sex-inclusive. https://endtodv.org/davia/
