Discredit to the Very Problems It Purports to Address: DAVIA Urges UN to Withdraw A/77/136 From Further Consideration

WASHINGTON / November 1, 2022 – The United Nations Committee on Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Issues is considering a document on “Violence Against Women and Girls, Its Causes and Consequences.” (1) Sadly, the A/77/136 report is so flawed that the Domestic Abuse and Violence International Alliance is calling on the Third Committee to withdraw the proposal from further consideration, or risk discrediting legitimate efforts to address climate change, COVID, and domestic violence.

DAVIA’s analysis of the UN document reveals the following flaws:

Lack of scientific credibility due to inadequate and inaccurate sourcing of key claims.
Making the claim that ”Studies found that women are 14 times more likely to die in a climate catastrophe than men,” a claim that is unverifiable, implausible, and has been described by independent reviewers as a “Zombie statistic.” (2)
Falsely claiming that the COVID “disproportionately” affects women and girls, despite the fact that police reports, crime statistics, and peer reviewed research reveal no increase in domestic violence during the course of the pandemic. (3)
Exclusion of research on mortality associated with famines, an Orwellian manipulation of that serves to eliminate consideration of natural disasters that have consistently demonstrated higher mortality rates in men. (4)
A failure to acknowledge, even briefly, the fact that women are equally likely as men to engage in domestic violence. (5)
Turning male victims of violence into non-persons, a tactic long associated with totalitarian regimes. (6)
